Small Sculpture No. 2

cast iron, hydrostone, rubber
dimensions: 24 in x 48 in x 18 in
2002

Small Sculpture No. 2 is a companion piece to the fantasy of a radioactive sculpture . It is a long cast composite gypsum platform with a rusted cast iron object placed at one end. The surface of the white base is stained with rust and other imperfections in the crystal structure of the material. The empty space on the opposite end of the base suggests the ongoing and future decomposition of the iron object.

The nugget of iron in this piece has a unique history. It was created in a cupola furnace that I built to melt iron for casting. The furnace became clogged with solidified iron and had to be destroyed. The iron object in this sculpture is part of the cylindrical obstruction of solid iron that had to be cut out of the melting chamber of the furnace.
